The future of small business marketing is in-house

In a recent blog post Identified Marketing Insights for 2020, I mentioned the idea that more small business owners should adopt a basic marketing strategy at home.

Now, this may sound like a strange trend for a marketing consultant to promote, but let me tell you a story about a typical small business in the digital marketing world today.

Years ago I started working with a small remodeling contractor helping them transition into the digital age. We helped them narrow down their ideal customer description, create a core message that helped them stand out, and fundamentally updated their brand identity and promise.

We made their website more usable, added a blog (probably a first for a remodeling contractor), worked on their SEO, introduced them to social media, and started running ads that attracted leads. Pretty standard stuff today.

And boy did it work. , ,

They doubled in size and then doubled, and again. Now, while I like to take credit for this success, the fact remains that they do a great job, they treat their customers right, and they have a strong culture of service.

But as they grew rapidly, it became clear that they could grow even faster with an even stronger marketing effort that included community relationships, public relations, referral programs, even visuals like Instagram and Pinterest. Including focusing on the platforms.

But, at the time, I was their entire marketing department and They really needed to start building an internal team to go to the next level., I introduced him to the idea and it went nowhere.

Here’s why – they tried this in the past before joining my services and it failed miserably so they gunned down.

When I hit the idea they eventually admitted that it failed because they didn’t really have the ability to train, manage and direct the “marketing manager”, so the person they hired had There was no real plan and ended up working on things that weren’t relevant in the big picture. (Truthfully he took a liking to a lot of businesses and found a young, cheap hire who figured out how to do social media.)

a new way

I had a great working relationship with this business and wanted to continue helping them grow so I proposed an innovative solution.

I would help them hire, train, and eventually direct a “marketing manager” with them. I had already built a repeatable marketing system and a training course, so I knew I could make this work for them.

did a good job. We were able to find a relatively inexperienced marketing manager and help them fully elevate them to a level where they now have a powerful internal resource and are on the verge of adding more teams.

Oh, and did I mention their business is now 10 times the size of when I first started working with them. (That’s what the next level looks like.)

Now, that’s the point of this rather long post. I think this is a model whose time has come.

Certified Marketing Manager Training Coming

I’m currently working on a hybrid coaching model for businesses that need to scale up their marketing with an internal resource or team, but either don’t know how to do it or don’t know how. They will benefit from an outside resource that will help them to have a complete build. Marketing system, structure and planning – with their internal marketing resources.

  • Organizations that want to level up their current Marketing Manager
  • Organizations that are committed to personal development for their team

no second course

The details of the program are still being worked out but I want to emphasize this – this is not a course, Courses have their place, but let’s face it, some of us take action by using self-guided courses. (Let’s you know I’m right about that.)
